2025 NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Biomedical Research

The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) is now accepting applications for the 2025 Summer Internship Program.

This prestigious internship, part of the NIH Summer Internship Program  in Biomedical Research, provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in cutting-edge cancer research.

Open to undergraduates, graduate students, and medical/dental students, this program allows interns to work directly under top researchers and gain invaluable experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, and genetics.

NIH Internship Benefits

Selected interns will benefit from hands-on research experience while working under the guidance of experienced investigators at DCEG. In addition to research opportunities, interns will:

• Participate in career development and wellness training sessions.
• Attend NIH and DCEG meetings and seminars.
• Present their research findings at the DCEG and NIH Summer Research Program Poster Days.
• Receive a monthly stipend based on their academic level.

This program offers interns exposure to a collaborative and innovative research environment, making it a stepping stone for future careers in biomedical research .

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the NIH SIP and DCEG Summer Internship Program, applicants must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
• Be 18 years of age or older by June 1, 2025.
• Be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited high school, community college, college, university, or graduate/professional school.
• Have been accepted into a graduate program for Fall 2025, if currently in their final year of undergraduate studies.

Applicants with family members working at NIH should review the strict nepotism policy, which may affect eligibility for certain positions.

Programs and Research Areas

Interns can explore various research domains, including:

• Biostatistics – Large-scale data analysis and statistical models for cancer risk prediction.
• Clinical Genetics – Investigating cancer predisposition syndromes and genetic modifiers.
• Integrative Tumor Epidemiology – Understanding cancer etiology and progression.
• Infections and Immunoepidemiology – Studying oncogenic viruses and cancer risk factors.
• Metabolic Epidemiology – Examining dietary intake, obesity, and cancer risk correlations.
• Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology – Assessing industrial and environmental exposure risks.
• Radiation Epidemiology – Evaluating medical, occupational, and environmental radiation exposures.
• Translational Genomics – Mapping genetic variations related to cancer susceptibility.
