2025 Rosalynn Carter Journalism Fellowships

The Carter Center has announced that applications are now open for the 2025-2026 Rosalynn Carter Fellowships  for Mental Health Journalism. These prestigious fellowships support journalists covering mental health issues, equipping them with training, resources, and financial backing to produce in-depth and impactful stories.

This year, the fellowship also includes an international component focusing on the intersection of mental health and climate change. Journalists based in countries deemed most vulnerable to climate change (excluding the United States) are encouraged to apply for this specialized fellowship.

Fellowship Benefits

• Financial Support: Each fellow receives a $10,000 stipend to fund their reporting projects.
• Training & Mentorship: Intensive training on mental health reporting is provided, along with guidance from experts and previous fellows.
• Networking Opportunities: Fellows join an esteemed cohort of over 285 alumni, gaining access to a professional network of journalists and mental health specialists.
• Project Recognition: Past fellowship projects have won prestigious awards, including Pulitzer Prize nominations, Emmy Awards, and the Edward R. Murrow Award.
• Impactful Reporting: Fellows contribute to critical journalism that raises awareness, influences public policy, and reduces stigma around mental health.

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants must be professional journalists with a minimum of three years of experience.
• The U.S. fellowship  is open to journalists reporting on mental health topics within the country.
• The international fellowship is specifically for journalists reporting on mental health and climate change in climate-vulnerable nations outside the U.S.
• Projects can be in any media format, including digital, audio, video, and print.

1. U.S. Mental Health Journalism Fellowship – Open to journalists covering mental health issues within the United States.
2. International Climate Change and Mental Health Fellowship – Open to journalists based in climate-vulnerable countries outside the U.S. focusing on the impact of climate change on mental health.

Application Deadline

The last date to apply for the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism is April 2, 2025 (11:59 p.m. ET). Successful applicants will be announced on July 10, 2025, via the Carter Center’s website and social media channels.
