After several missed chances, the Nigerian striker earned a place in the statistical worst XI in the Europa League so far

However, while Rangers secured a top-eight finish, their Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers has found himself in an unenviable position—earning a spot in Sofascore’s Worst XI of the tournament’s opening stage.

Dessers’ struggles in front of goal

Despite featuring in all eight matches for Rangers, Dessers struggled with consistency, starting only five games and scoring just two goals.

The former Super Eagles striker was particularly wasteful in front of goal, missing nine big chances—a tally second only to Victor Osimhen in the competition.

One of Dessers’ few standout moments came against Manchester United when he controlled James Tavernier’s long ball and drilled a late equaliser past Altay Bayindir at Old Trafford.

Unfortunately for him and Rangers, Bruno Fernandes struck in stoppage time to snatch the win for the Red Devils.

A tough Europa League campaign for the Nigerian

His lack of clinical finishing and limited starts contributed to his struggles, raising questions about his long-term role at the club amidst exit rumours.

With the knockout rounds ahead, the 29-year-old will be hoping to improve and redeem himself in the latter stages of the tournament, and Rangers will need him at his best if they are to make a deep run in the Europa League.

Also included in Sofascore’s Worst XI were Tottenham star Radu Dragusin, rated the worst player in the league phase at 6.11, as well as Malmo’s Colin Rosler, who was the next lowest at 6.41.
