Portuguese giants Benfica have set their sights on KRC Genk’s in-form striker Tolu Arokodare as they look to bolster their attack before the transfer deadline.

Despite Genk’s reluctance to sell in January, reports from Portugal indicate that the two-time UEFA European Cup winners are keen on securing a deal for the Nigerian forward, who has been in scintillating form this season.

Benfica looking to strengthen attack

Benfica’s interest in Arokodare comes as they seek to add competition in their forward line amidst expected departures.

The club currently has Zeki Amdouni and Arthur Cabral as striking options, but neither has been able to cement a starting role, with Vangelis Pavlidis often preferred.

However, despite impressive statistics of 11 goals and seven assists in 32 games, Pavlidis has yet to fully win over the Benfica faithful.

Even with a Champions League hat-trick against Barcelona, Pavlidis has been deemed inconsistent with only four goals in 19 league games.

Genk unlikely to sell in January

Arokodare has been a standout performer for Genk, registering 16 goals and seven assists in 27 appearances this season.

His physical presence and goal-scoring ability have caught the attention of Benfica, who see him as an ideal addition to their squad.

While Benfica are eager to make a move, Genk remains firm in their stance that no key players will be leaving during the winter transfer window.

The Belgian club signed Arokodare from Amiens for €5 million and could make a substantial profit if they decide to sell, with his market value now estimated at €9 million.

With 33 goals and 12 assists in 91 matches for Genk, Arokodare has proven to be a reliable goal scorer, and while a move this winter may be unlikely, Benfica and other European clubs could come knocking again in the summer.
