Arsenal’s January transfer window
The Gunners went into the window, needing to solve problems in the attack. While they recently romped Manchester City 5-1, they were not as free-scoring weeks ago and hence needed to bring in a forward.
Also, their star winger Bukayo Saka was injured, and his understudy Raheem Sterling visited the treatment table. All of this set up a stage for a busy winter window for Arsenal, and Arteta, when asked about their activity weeks ago, admitted they were working behind the scenes.
The Gunners left it late in the window to table an official bid for a forward; hence, Aston Villa rejected their €60 million offer for Ollie Watkins, citing the exit of Jhon Duran and the timing of Arsenal’s bid—late in the window.
What Arteta said
The transfer window closed yesterday, and there was no new signing for Gunners fans to be excited about, despite the necessity. Asked what he thought about their inactivity, Arteta expressed disappointment.
“We had a clear intention, which is always when a window opens, to explore the opportunities to improve our squad, he said. “With players with injuries, we’ve been impacted and we haven’t achieved it.
“We are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that as well.”
