The Premier League have unveiled a six-point plan to improve the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
The key changes include the introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) and allowing referees to explain VAR decisions to fans in the stadium.

When are these VAR changes expected?
SAOT is expected to be implemented before the end of the season, although the Premier League has said it will wait until next season if there are any concerns about the technology’s reliability.

The Premier League also plans to give referees the ability to explain VAR decisions to fans in the stadium from the start of next season.
This is currently not permitted under IFAB rules, but the Premier League is lobbying for a change.
Other planned improvements include increased transparency, better training for VAR officials and improved communication with fans.

As per Sky Sports, the Premier League’s six-point plan include:

Improve the clarity around the high threshold for VAR intervention, and make ‘referee’s call’ part of the regular football vocabulary.

Reduce delays to the game, with SAOT introduced as soon as it is ready.

Improve the fan experience, with clear referee announcements and replays and messaging on the big screens.

Improve VAR training to improve decision-making.

Improve transparency with more regular messaging for broadcasters and fans via the PL Match Centre while games are ongoing at Stockley Park.

Develop better education and communication around VAR for fans and everyone involved with the game.
What next?
The next full round of Premier League fixtures begins with Chelsea’s trip to Brighton on February 14, although Liverpool visit Everton in a rescheduled gameweek 15 fixture on February 12.
