Koln started strong, with Damion Downs breaking the deadlock in first-half stoppage time before Linton Maina doubled the lead in the 54th minute. However, Leverkusen fought back, as Patrik Schick pulled one back in the 61st minute and then equalized deep into added time, forcing extra time.

With momentum on their side, Leverkusen found the winner through Boniface, whose clutch finish sealed victory for the reigning DFB-Pokal champions.
