Olympic gold medallist Mobi Oparaku has urged Eric Chelle, the head coach of the Super Eagles, to create a cohesive squad instead of a group of individuals.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles get ready for the important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in March.

The Super Eagles, who have only three points from their first four games, are facing a difficult situation in Group C.

The team has not won any games in the group and are in fifth place in the standings ahead of their game against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye returned from injury ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

Oparaku warns Chelle

Oparaku thinks that team unity would be essential to restarting the Super Eagles’ campaign as they get ready to play Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.

Speaking to Brila FM, the 48-year-old said, “When they come out (next month), they should not come out as individuals playing for Nigeria, but they should come out as a team that is representing Nigeria.

“There is a difference between a player that comes to represent the Super Eagles and a team of players that come out to represent Nigeria.

“When they come out as a team that represents the country, we can then talk about what they have, but not as individuals. But when we speak about individuals, it means we don’t have a team. 

“I hope this new coach (Eric Sekou Chelle) will be able to pull the team together and play like a gang for the World Cup qualifiers.”

Chelle’s next challenge is to defeat the stubborn Rwanda and Zimbabwe to rekindle Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.
