His departure was triggered by an infamous MUTV interview, where he harshly criticised his teammates following a 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough.
The interview was deemed so damaging that it was never aired, and it ultimately led to a fractured relationship between Keane and Ferguson.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast about his departure, Keane admitted: “When I left United, I did cry that morning. Cried in my car.”
The 53-year-old had previously spoken about the emotional moment, acknowledging that despite his warrior mentality, the situation was overwhelming, saying, “I think the only time I really cried was when I left United. I had a bit of a disagreement with a few people, but other than that, you’re in that bubble.”
Keane still resentful over Ferguson fallout
Keane has never hidden his grievances over the way Manchester United handled his departure, and his relationship with Ferguson has remained strained ever since.

Looking back on the situation, he felt the club used his age and injury issues as an excuse to move him on.
“I was 34, I had a broken foot, and my contract was coming up,” Keane said adding, “It was an easy fix for United to say, ‘Your days are numbered, thanks a lot.’ I could have left in the summer, and I had no hang-ups about that. “It wasn’t nice—that’s the bit. Not that I had to leave United, but the way it was done.”
