Jose Mourinho’s influence is quickly spreading in the Formula One.

Four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen has pulled a classic José Mourinho move when asked about the FIA’s new anti-swearing regulations, choosing to avoid controversy with a legendary response.

During the F1 75 live event in London on Tuesday, Verstappen was questioned about the sport’s new language restrictions, which aim to curb the use of foul language by drivers during official engagements. 

The 27-year-old Dutchman, however, wasn’t keen to comment, instead borrowing from Mourinho’s famous 2014 line after Chelsea’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Speaking to reporters, The Red Bull Racing driver said as per GOAL and The Independent:

“I prefer not to speak about that. Otherwise, I’ll get in trouble. If you look at everyone’s reaction to it, I think that says enough. I think we shouldn’t take it so seriously. I’m also not going to tell you how you should behave in life.”

His response was a clear nod to Mourinho’s infamous reaction, where the then-Chelsea boss told Sky Sports:

“I prefer not to speak. If I speak, I am in big trouble. In big trouble. And I don’t want to be in big trouble.”

Max Verstappen’s rocky past with the FIA

Verstappen’s reluctance to speak on the matter may stem from his own history with the FIA’s disciplinary actions.

Last year, the Red Bull driver was charged under the same law and was forced to complete community service in Rwanda after using foul language during a press conference.

While some drivers and fans see the new rule as an attempt to police personalities, Verstappen made it clear he’s not looking to stir any drama.

“I have no intention of continuing any type of beef in February. I’m still enjoying my time away from F1. Honestly, I have nothing to say on that subject,” he added.

With the F1 season fast approaching, it remains to be seen whether Verstappen will continue to play it safe—or if the heat of competition will force another unfiltered moment from the defending champion.
