US continues foreign aid despite USAID program suspension, says Marco Rubio
United States Secretary of States, Marco Rubio has confirmed that the country is still providing foreign aid, despite the suspension of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) programs.
In an interview with journalist, Catherine Herridge on X, Rubio reiterated the U.S. government’s commitment to foreign aid while defending the review of USAID’s operations.
“I’m not against foreign aid. I’ve supported foreign aid. We’re going to do foreign aid. No one here is saying we’re going to have zero, and some [programs] have already survived,” Rubio explained.
The suspension of USAID-funded initiatives comes as part of a broader overhaul of the agency under President Donald Trump’s administration. Rubio suggested that some of the programs under scrutiny “shouldn’t have ever existed.”
Meanwhile, Elon Musk, head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has heavily criticized USAID, calling it a “criminal organization” that “needs to die.”
Following the freeze, USAID employees around the world were placed on administrative leave, and the agency’s website, including past financial reports, have been taken offline.
