Juventus plotting Lookman move following penalty incident

Ademola Lookman: Does Africa's finest deserve an apology from Gasperini after 'disrespectful' comments?

Juventus are reportedly keeping an eye on Ademola Lookman’s situation at Atalanta.

Juventus have reportedly entered the race for Super Eagles ace Ademola Lookman in the wake of his fallout with Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

The 27-year-old led La Dea to their first-ever European title last season. Following the high, he sought to exploit the opportunity to move to a bigger club, and he was not lacking suitors, with Paris Saint-Germain reaching an agreement on personal terms with him. However, Atalanta blocked the move.

Ademola Lookman: Does Africa's finest deserve an apology from Gasperini after 'disrespectful' comments?

Nigeria Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman and his manager Gian Piero Gasperini have had a heated exchange following their Champions League exit in midweek.

This falling apart

That picture has, however, since changed, with the Bergamo-based club increasingly open to selling Lookman. They would only be more keen after the events of the past few days that tore a divide between their coach and best player.

The former Fulham man missed a crucial penalty in Atalanta’s embarrassing Champions League exit to Club Brugge. An angry Gasperini berated Lookman after the match, accusing him of being a terrible penalty taker.

Several hours later, Lookman responded publicly as well. He accused the manager of singling him out, before explaining that the designated penalty taker offered him the chance, as he scored moments before the spot kick was won. He said that to address Gasperini’s suggestion that glory hunting led him to take the penalty off Mateo Retegui or Charles de Ketelaere.

Juventus staying attentive

According to a report from Tuttomercatoweb, the Old Lady are keeping an eye on the situation and would be ready to pounce once Lookman becomes available.

Juventus’s sporting director, Cristiano Guintoli, is said to be following the situation personally, as he rates the talent Lookman is. The record Serie A winners were one of the clubs linked with the Nigerian last summer, but a move did not materialise.

Meanwhile, according to Transfermarkt, Lookman’s transfer value is around €55 million. His contract runs until 2026; however, Atalanta have an option to extend until 2027. This means they have sufficient leverage to hold out for their specified price; however, the current situation with Gasperini could make them more amenable to undervalued offers.
