A total of 29,797 persons applied to work as teachers in Abia State government’s ongoing recruitment exercise, thereby oversubscribing the originally provided 2,500 slots.
In response, Governor Alex Otti has increased the slot to 5,000.
Commissioner for information, Okey Kanu made this known at the Government House, Umuahia, on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu, who said that the portal for the recruitment was shut down on February 12, said that 9,371 applicants who have been shortlisted by the State government out of the 29,797, would soon be invited for a Computer Based Test (CBT).
“The portal for the recruitment of teachers was shut down on the 12th February, 2025 and at the last count, about 29,797 applications were received,” he disclosed.
He said that those who passed the exams would be invited for oral interview after which the successful ones would be finally employed on merit.
The Abia Information Commissioner announced that Abia State government had made Igbo language a compulsory subject in the state’s school system from primary school to SS2, adding that the study of history had been re-introduced in Abia schools with immediate effect.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi confirmed that the number of teachers to be employed had been increased to 5,000 by Governor Otti.
