Manchester United’s £72m striker Rasmus Hojlund arrived with high expectations, but after a promising debut season, his struggles have been evident in the 2024-25 campaign. With just two Premier League goals this season, concerns are growing over whether he is the right fit to lead United’s attack.
Former United striker Dwight Yorke is among those questioning Hojlund’s long-term prospects at Old Trafford. He believes the young Dane has not shown enough to suggest he can be the club’s future number nine. Yorke insists United must address this issue in the summer transfer window if they are serious about competing at the highest level.
While Newcastle’s Alexander Isak has been linked with a move to United, Yorke doubts the Swedish striker would choose the Red Devils over Arsenal or Liverpool. Instead, he has urged his former club to look towards their Premier League rivals for a solution.
Yorke Backs Nunez as United’s Next Striker
Rather than pursuing Isak, Yorke believes Manchester United should make a bold move for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan striker, who joined the Reds from Benfica in 2022 for a deal worth up to £85m, has struggled for consistency at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot recently criticized Nunez for a costly miss in a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, as well as his reaction to the error. With uncertainty surrounding his future, Yorke sees an opportunity for United to step in.
“I would be brave and take a look at Darwin Nunez if Liverpool make him available,” Yorke said. “He’s still 25, has a physical presence that not too many players have, and United need someone with that belief and confidence.”
Yorke emphasized that Nunez has the swagger and presence to lead the line for Manchester United, something he feels Hojlund lacks. With Liverpool likely to make attacking reinforcements in the summer, Yorke believes Nunez could be offloaded, giving United the perfect opportunity to strike.
Why Nunez Could Be Available This Summer
Liverpool’s transfer strategy under Slot could see them make significant changes to their squad in the summer. If they sign a new forward, they may be forced to offload players to balance the books, making Nunez a potential casualty.

“The transfer market is a game of chess,” Yorke explained. “Moves open up opportunities. If Liverpool sign a new forward, someone has to be offloaded. If it’s Nunez, I’d tell United to take a serious look at him.”
Yorke’s comments come amid reports that Nunez was a target for Saudi Arabian clubs in January, though Liverpool blocked any move at the time. However, with Slot looking to shape his squad in the coming months, Nunez’s long-term future at Anfield remains uncertain.
Arsenal Also Linked with Nunez Move
While Yorke wants United to pursue Nunez, other clubs could also enter the race. Former Germany international Dietmar Hamann recently suggested that Arsenal should have moved for Nunez in January to bolster their attacking options.

Mikel Arteta’s side has been hit with injuries, leaving them short of attacking options in a crucial part of the season. If Liverpool decide to part ways with Nunez, Arsenal could also consider making a move to strengthen their squad.
With Manchester United looking to rebuild and Liverpool potentially open to selling, this summer could be a defining one for Darwin Nunez’s future. Will United make the bold move Yorke is calling for, or will another club step in to secure his signature?
