Ruben Amorim has defended young defender Patrick Dorgu following his red card in Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Ipswich, emphasizing the 20-year-old is “clearly ready” for Premier League football.

Making only his third appearance for United since his £25 million move from Lecce in January, Dorgu endured a night to forget. A defensive lapse between him and Andre Onana gifted Ipswich an early lead through Jaden Philogene just four minutes in.

Things quickly worsened when, in the 43rd minute, Dorgu mistimed a tackle on Omari Hutchinson, earning a straight red card after a VAR review.

Despite being reduced to ten men, United responded well. Goals from Matthijs de Ligt and an own goal from Sam Morsy initially gave them control. Although Philogene struck again before halftime, Harry Maguire’s decisive header early in the second half secured all three points.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Amorim praised his side’s resilience, even after going a man down.

“I’m not frustrated,” he said. “Mistakes happen, but from the start, I felt the players were playing well. We scored twice, and after the red card, the team showed great fight. Our fans played a big role, and we deserved the three points.”

United’s head coach also urged his squad to savor the victory before shifting focus to their upcoming FA Cup clash against Fulham. “There are tough moments in football, but we must enjoy these wins,” he added. “We’ll take it one game at a time and prepare for what’s next.”

Dorgu’s red card means he will miss United’s next three matches, including crucial Premier League fixtures against Arsenal and Leicester. Despite his costly mistake, Amorim dismissed any concerns over the young full-back’s ability.

“He’s ready for this level,” Amorim insisted. “Last week, he played well against Everton, and now, after one mistake, people question him. But I don’t see it that way. He’s inexperienced, but he’s learning.”

Despite the adversity, Amorim was pleased with United’s control of possession, even after being reduced to ten men. “We started the game differently, and you could see it in our composure,” he explained. “Even after conceding early, we dictated the tempo and created chances. That’s progress.”

Sitting 14th in the league, United’s season remains unpredictable. With Dorgu suspended, Amorim will need to reshuffle his squad for the upcoming fixtures as they push to finish the season on a high.
