Nigerian journalist believes Super Eagles legend Austin Jay Jay Okocha shouldn’t trash-talk Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher due to the latter’s superior football career.
Nigerian journalist and podcaster Motolani Alake has come to the defense of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher following a heated exchange with Nigerian football icon Jay Jay Okocha.
As reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria, Okocha had criticised Carragher for his comments about the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), suggesting that no one would want their son to play like Carragher.

“There are some players that will say something and you just overlook them. If you look at their careers, the type of football that they played, you can understand. I mean, you won’t want your son to be like [Jamie] Carragher,” Okocha stated.
However, Alake believes that Okocha should not have engaged in trash talk with Carragher, given the latter’s superior football career.

Alake took to social media to express his views, stating that if anyone were to criticise Carragher, it should be someone like Mikel Obi, who is on a similar level.
“Mikel Obi can diss Carragher. They’re probably on the same level. If anybody is dissing Carragher, it should not be Jay Jay Okocha,” he said on X.
Carragher scoffed at the statement that AFCON is a major tournament.
He further opined that Okocha’s actions were unwarranted and that anyone who aspires to be like Okocha over Carragher or Obi is “stupid.”
“ And anyone who prays to be Jay Jay Okocha over those two, is actually stupid,” he added.

Alake’s comments reflect a broader debate about the respect and recognition given to African football, with many defending AFCON as a major tournament.
Carragher’s career is marked by significant achievements, including a UEFA Champions League title and numerous domestic honors with Liverpool.
