With the Spanish midfielder still sidelined due to an ACL injury, Mikel believes the Liverpool midfielder has stepped up in a way that makes him very similar to Rodri and, therefore an ideal successor for the Spanish maestro.
Mikel recognises Gravenberch’s transformation under Slot
Speaking on his podcast, John Obi Mikel showered praise on Ryan Gravenberch following his recent resurgence under Arne Slot.
Drawing a direct comparison between Gravenberch and Manchester City’s Rodri, Mikel said, “So because I am one, I play in my position. When I see a player who’s doing so well, I become a huge fan.
“And for me, Gravenberch—the way he plays, not only defending, breaking up play—when he has the ball, you know, he drives the ball forward, he pushes the team forward. For me, I like it. It’s a bit like Rodri. And for me, he’s been absolutely fantastic, really.”
Mikel went on to lament how defensive midfielders often don’t get the credit they deserve, despite their importance in controlling matches.
Rodri’s injury opens seach for long-term replacement
With Rodri’s long-term future uncertain after his ACL rupture, Manchester City will be keeping a close eye on potential replacements.
Given the void left by Rodri in Pep Guardiola’s midfield, Gravenberch could logically be an ideal successor. However, there’s one massive hurdle—Liverpool’s reluctance to sell to a direct Premier League rival.
Even if City were to put forward a massive bid, Liverpool are unlikely to part ways with a player who has become instrumental to their current title challenge.
On top of that, Gravenberch is only 22, meaning his best years are still ahead of him, something Liverpool would be foolish to give up on.
While Mikel may have found the perfect Rodri successor, the financial and competitive realities of the Premier League mean that a move to City is almost impossible.
