What happened

In an interview with La Revuelta, Marcelo, who joined Real Madrid in 2007, explained how he thought Ronaldo joining the club in the splash summer of 2009 would coincide with his exit, as they fought months earlier.

The incident in question was an international friendly between Brazil and Portugal. The duo clashed, and Ronaldo grabbed Marcelo on the neck.

“My relationship with Cristiano started with a fight,” Marcelo said. “I kicked him; he was very fast. He passed by, elbowed me, and I kicked him, and he grabbed me by the neck. I tried as well, but he was very tall,” he laughed.

“I received the message that Madrid was going to sign him in two months. And I thought, blimey, I’m leaving.”

The friendship formed after

Needless to say, Ronaldo’s arrival did not lead to Marcelo’s exit, as the former Brazil international outlasted the Portuguese at the club.

During their stint together, from 2009–2018, they formed arguably the best left flank in European football, with Marcelo at left back and Ronaldo largely on the left wing.

Together, they won two LALIGA titles, four Champions Leagues, and two Copa del Rey titles; equally importantly, they formed an enviable bromance. After Marcelo retired from football earlier in the year, Ronaldo penned a heartfelt message, tagging 36-year-old his brother.

“My brother, what an incredible career,” Ronaldo shared, per the Mirror. “We’ve lived through so much together—years of achievements, victories, and unforgettable moments. More than a teammate, a lifelong companion. Thank you for everything, my friend. I wish you all the best in this new stage of your life.”

Despite the relationship, however, Marcelo did not name Cristiano as the best footballer of all time when asked by La Revuelta; instead he gave a more diplomatic response, urging fans to enjoy both players, i.e., Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
