With his contract set to expire in the summer and negotiations at a standstill, Salah has allegedly offered himself to Barcelona even though financial hurdles could make a move difficult.

Barcelona’s financial struggles could block a Salah move

Barcelona have made no secret of their desire to bolster their attack this summer, but their ongoing financial constraints mean that any big-name signing comes with serious challenges.

The Catalan giants have already ruled out a return for Neymar, backed away from pursuing Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, and seem priced out of a move for Rafael Leao.

However, reports now suggest that Salah himself has shown interest in joining Barcelona, initiating informal contact with the club back in December. Despite his interest, negotiations did not materialise, largely due to one major obstacle, his salary.

At €18 million per season, Salah’s wages are well beyond what Barcelona can afford under La Liga’s strict financial fair play regulations. For a deal to happen, the 32-year-old would need to accept a significant pay cut—something that seems unlikely given that he also has lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia remains most lucrative option for Salah

While Barcelona struggle to justify a move for Salah, Saudi Pro League clubs are waiting with open arms this summer.

Reports indicate that Al-Hilal are prepared to offer the Egyptian winger a staggering €50 million per year, making Barcelona’s proposal financially unappealing by comparison. Some sources even claim that Salah has already agreed to terms with the Saudi giants, though no official confirmation has been made.

From a tactical standpoint, Salah’s potential arrival at Barcelona would also raise questions as his preferred right-wing position is already occupied by Lamine Yamal.

The only alternative would be deploying him centrally as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who, at 37 years old, is nearing the twilight of his career.
