The Adamawa State Government has allocated 300 hectares of land for contractors to clear farmland in Hong and Maiha Local Government Areas.

The two LGAs are among six selected for the pilot stage of a farmland preparation and planting project planned for all 21 LGAs in the state.

During the handover of the farm plots to the contractors on Thursday, the government stated that the project aligns with Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s vision to ensure food security across the state.

Under the initiative, each LGA is to be allocated 300 hectares, which will be divided among 300 farmers, each receiving one hectare for farming.

The other LGAs included in the pilot phase are Demsa, Ganye, Madagali, and Michika, after which the project will be expanded to the remaining LGAs.

Handing over the land clearing contracts for Maiha and Hong to Jimtext B Construction Company, the state Commissioner of Agriculture, Professor David Jatau, urged local government leaders to allocate the farmland to diligent youths.

Jatau stated that the state government would provide all necessary farm inputs free of charge and assured that the beneficiaries would have full ownership of the harvested crops and be free to use them as they wished.

The commissioner tasked the contractors with ensuring early clearance of the land so that the allottees could begin farming at the start of the coming rainy season.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Heidi Edgar Sunday, announced that, among other inputs, genetically improved seeds and quality fertiliser would be provided for all land allottees.

The District Head of Hong, Alhaji Umar Babangida Mahmud, who represented the paramount ruler of Hong Chiefdom, the Töl Héba, Alhaji Bulus Nyako, assured the government of the chiefdom’s full commitment to the success of the assisted farming project.
