Bruno Fernandes put the Martin Odegaard comparisons to bed with a man of the match performance in Europe
Manchester United had captain fantastic Bruno Fernandes to thank for their hammering of Real Sociedad as the Portuguese star scored a hat-trick to help the hosts to a 4-1 win at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s 4-1 win on the night and 5-2 on aggregate saw them reach the Europa League quarterfinal where they will now face Lyon.
How it happened
After securing a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg Real Sociedad were the first out of the gate as they were awarded a penalty within the first 10 minutes.
After Mathijs De Ligt was adjudged to have fouled Mikel Oyarzabal, the Real Sociedad captain picked himself up to beat Andre Onana from the spot.
Manchester United responded swiftly through captain Bruno Fernandes who also found the back of the net via the penalty spot to level the tie on the night and on aggregate.
The sides went into half-time level at 1-1 but it only took Fernandez’s five minutes to put Manchester United in the lead via the third penalty of the match.
Real Sociedad’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a severe blow when Jon Aramburu was shown a straight red card for a professional foul midway through the second half.
The Red Devils almost had a third penalty when Hamari Traore was deemed to have fouled Destiny Udogie in the box, but the decision was overturned by VAR after the Danish defender also informed the referee that he had not been fouled.
As the game neared its end, Manchester United made the one man advantage count when Fernandes completed his hat-trick with a fine finish after being played through on goal by Alejandro Garnacho.
With the game already beyond Real Sociedad, Diogo Dalot scored Manchester United’s fourth to put the cherry on top for the Red Devils.
