Liverpool’s hopes of lifting the Carabao Cup have taken a hit as head coach Arne Slot confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the final against Newcastle United. The right-back was forced off during the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain and will not recover in time for Sunday’s showdown at Wembley.
Alexander-Arnold’s absence is a major blow for Liverpool, who are aiming for their first trophy under Slot since he took over from Jurgen Klopp last summer. Slot, however, remains optimistic that the 26-year-old will return before the end of the season.
“Trent is indeed not available for the final. We’re assessing him, but we expect him to be back before the end of the season,” Slot told reporters during his pre-match press conference.
Liverpool’s defensive issues are compounded by Ibrahima Konate’s fitness concerns. The Frenchman was also substituted against PSG and hasn’t trained since. Slot revealed that Konate might return to training on Friday to test his fitness ahead of the final.
Despite the setbacks, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is confident his team can rise to the occasion. “Preparation has been very good. We’re positive and focused on delivering a great performance,” Howe said.
On the other hand, Newcastle United will be without Anthony Gordon, who is suspended after receiving a red card in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton. Lewis Hall and Sven Botman are also sidelined due to injury.
Howe also called on Newcastle fans to support the team as they aim for their first major trophy since 1969. “We need every bit of help to push ourselves over the line. The support from our fans will be crucial,” he added.
With key players missing on both sides, Sunday’s Carabao Cup final promises to be a fiercely contested battle at Wembley.
