Chelsea have reportedly won the race to sign Sporting Lisbon’s teenage sensation Geovany Quenda, beating Manchester United to the Portuguese starlet’s signature. The deal will see the 17-year-old officially move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2026.

Manchester United were initially leading the race for Quenda, especially with former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim pushing for a reunion at Old Trafford. However, Chelsea acted swiftly to secure the talented right-sided player, completing a deal worth between €45m (£38m) and €50m (£42m).

According to journalist David Ornstein, Quenda has already undergone a medical and agreed to a contract that will keep him at Chelsea until 2033, with the option for an additional year. As part of the agreement, he will remain on loan at Sporting for the 2024-25 season before making his move to the Premier League.

Quenda has been part of Sporting’s system since 2019, rising through the youth ranks before making his first-team debut in 2024. Since then, he has made 43 appearances, scoring twice and providing eight assists. Amorim had converted him into a right-sided wing-back, but Chelsea reportedly plan to use him as a right winger.

The teenager fits the profile of Manchester United’s new transfer strategy, which focuses on securing emerging talents. However, Chelsea’s long-term project and the promise of playing in an attacking role were key factors in Quenda’s decision to join the Blues.

Quenda’s arrival in 2026 is part of Chelsea’s ongoing strategy to invest in future stars, with the young Portuguese talent expected to play a vital role in the club’s future success.

This move is seen as a significant loss for United, who had identified Quenda as a key target for the summer transfer window. Despite missing out, United could still look to strengthen their right-wing-back position, with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui as current options.
