Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has admitted to dangerous driving after being caught speeding at 99mph before a crash on the A34 near Handforth, Cheshire, on August 20, 2023. The 24-year-old, who was on loan at Ipswich Town at the time, was seen with a balloon in his mouth while driving nearly 30mph over the speed limit.

Williams collided with a blue Ford Fiesta at around 6:17 pm before crashing into the central reservation. Witnesses alerted the police, and Williams was breathalysed at the scene. However, the test showed no traces of alcohol.

Following the incident, Williams was taken to the hospital for treatment and later transferred to Middlewich custody suite. On Friday, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without third-party insurance at Chester Crown Court.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) revealed that Williams admitted to being the driver but denied losing control of the vehicle, blaming another driver for forcing him to swerve. When asked about the balloon seen in his mouth, Williams responded with “no comment.”

Andrew Madden, a senior crown prosecutor with CPS Mersey-Cheshire, criticized Williams’ behavior, stating that his driving fell “far below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver.” Madden highlighted that Williams was clocked at 99mph just four seconds before the collision.

Witnesses described Williams’ driving as erratic, with frequent speeding and sudden braking. Madden emphasized that it was fortunate no one was seriously injured or killed and thanked the witnesses for supporting the case.

Williams, who made 51 appearances for Manchester United after debuting under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019, spent loan spells at Norwich City and Ipswich Town. His contract with United expired last summer, leaving him as a free agent.

With his football career uncertain, Williams now faces serious legal consequences. The court is set to announce his sentencing in the coming weeks.
