Chelsea have successfully beaten Manchester United to the signing of highly-rated Sporting Lisbon winger Geovany Quenda. The Blues have agreed on a £41 million deal for the 17-year-old, who will remain at Sporting for another season before making his Premier League move.
United had shown genuine interest in Quenda and even held talks with his agent Jorge Mendes. However, the January arrival of left-back Patrick Dorgu influenced United’s decision to step back, allowing Chelsea to swoop in and secure the deal.
Chelsea’s focus on young talent continues, with Quenda joining the likes of Kendry Paez and Estevao Willian, who are set to support emerging stars like Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto. But the Blues aren’t stopping there.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have now turned their attention to Dario Essugo, another player who developed under Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon. Essugo, currently on loan at Las Palmas, has made 17 La Liga appearances this season and is seen as a future midfield star.
Chelsea’s positive relationship with Sporting, strengthened by the Quenda deal, is expected to facilitate Essugo’s transfer. The Blues are hoping to finalize the move in the summer, adding further depth to their growing roster of young talent.
Sporting manager Rui Borges praised Quenda’s rapid development, acknowledging that interest from major clubs was inevitable. However, Borges emphasized the need for the young winger to stay mentally focused as he prepares for his move to Stamford Bridge.
“He’s growing quickly, and sometimes we forget he’s only 17,” Borges said. “It’s natural that big clubs will show interest, but he has to learn to handle the pressure.”
With Quenda already secured and Essugo potentially on the way, Chelsea’s long-term strategy of investing in top young talent continues to take shape under BlueCo’s ambitious project.
