Former Nigerian international Alloy Agu has offered his opinions on the appointment of Eric Chelle as the Super Eagles’ new head coach.

This week, Chelle was introduced as the 37th head coach and the first African, who is not a Nigerian, to lead the country’s national side.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held the ceremony in Abuja as he replaced Augustine Eguavoen, the interim coach.

The tactician signed a two-year contract, with the option of another year, if he qualifies the Super Eagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to Complete Sports, Agu said, “I am delighted that the NFF has appointed a new coach, Eric Chelle, to manage the Super Eagles.

“Many may doubt Chelle, but the NFF must have their reasons for his appointment, and I believe he will succeed with the senior national team if given the free hand to operate.

“Impossible is nothing when it comes to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With the right attitude from the players and coaches, I feel very optimistic that Nigeria will qualify for the World Cup.

“We just need to show him support and provide information where necessary; that will help the team improve.”

Agu expressed confidence about the choice, highlighting the necessity of support from the NFF, the players, and the coaching staff to ensure Chelle’s success.

The 47-year-old coach has been given the responsibility of guiding Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even though the Super Eagles’ qualifying campaign hasn’t started well.

In their qualifying group, Nigeria is currently behind Rwanda, South Africa, Benin, and Lesotho; only the group winners will be assured a trip to the Mundial.

The Super Eagles will play Rwanda in Kigali and Zimbabwe in Uyo, Nigeria, in the upcoming round of qualifiers in March.
