Despite scoring twice to secure a dramatic win for Liverpool against Brentford, a former Reds star has overlooked Nunez while naming the best player on the pitch.

Former Liverpool star Steve MacManaman ignored Darwin Nunez when choosing the Reds’ best performer in Saturday’s dramatic 2-0 Premier League win at Brentford.

Nunez’s late heroics secured a vital win for Liverpool, who dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the match. 

As the game entered its final stages, it seemed Liverpool would be frustrated. However, the centre-forward broke the deadlock in the 84th minute, tapping in an Alexander-Arnold cut-back. 

He then sealed the victory with a second goal in stoppage time, finishing off a swift counter-attack.

While the striker grabbed the headlines with his match-winning double, MacManaman singled out Trent Alexander-Arnold for praise, declaring him “by far the best player on the pitch”.

The full-back was instrumental in Liverpool’s attacking play, providing the assist for Nunez’s opening goal. The ex-Reds star also praised manager Arne Slot for his tactical substitutions, which helped to change the course of the match.

“Injury time winners feel sweeter, and Darwin Nunez is never far from the headlines,” he said on Premier League productions. 

“Arne Slot deserves a lot of credit for his substitutions and changing the match. They got the result they needed to apply the pressure on Arsenal. Trent Alexander-Arnold was by far the best player on the pitch today.”

What comes next?

Saturday’s victory sent Liverpool seven points clear of Arsenal before the Gunners host Aston Villa in the tea-time fixture at the Emirates. 

The Reds’ return to Premier League action against Ipswich on January 25, four days after hosting Lille in the Champions League.
