Erling Haaland’s new contract with Manchester City has fuelled speculation that Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal-scoring record could be under threat. 

The Norwegian striker agreed to a new deal with the Manchester outfit until 2034, opening the possibility of eclipsing the English top-flight’s leading goalscorer.

Haaland has been in sensational form since joining City, scoring 79 goals in just 88 appearances, and his remarkable goals-per-game ratio of 0.9 is significantly higher than Shearer’s 0.59.

What Shearer said

Shearer himself has acknowledged the possibility of the Man City forward surpassing his tally of 260 goals. As per Opta, via BBC Sport, Haaland could break the record in his 287th Premier League game if he maintains his goalscoring rate. 

This could potentially happen as early as the 2029-30 season if he remains fit and continues to feature regularly for City.

“If he stays for that long, no doubt he will break that record,” Shearer told BBC Sport on Friday. “My record will go one day. It might be someone else’s by then – like Harry Kane or Mohamed Salah.

“There were great goalscorers before I was born that have incredible records as well.

“My record will go one day, I’m sure of that.”

The Premier League has seen some great goal scorers since the first ball was kicked in 1992. From Alan Shearer to Mohamed Salah, the Premier has not lacked quality attackers.
