Report: Greenwood set to switch from England to Jamaica after completing paperwork

Marseille striker Mason Greenwood is reportedly set to switch nationalities from England to Jamaica.

Former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood has reportedly completed the paperwork required to switch his national allegiance from England to Jamaica.

The 23-year-old forward made his England debut in 2020 but has only played the solitary game for the Three Lions, which happened before he turned 21. This makes him eligible to switch nationalities according to FIFA regulations.

Why Greenwood is switching

While the charges levied against him for attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm by the Crown Prosecution Service were dropped, Greenwood still remains a sort of pariah in English football, given the damning evidence of an alleged abuse that made the rounds on social media.

Manchester United suggested he was innocent in their statement but shipped him off to Getafe, stating both parties were better served if his future was spent away from the club.

And according to reports, the English FA explicitly told Greenwood he would no longer be eligible for Three Lions selection. Immediate interim coach Lee Carsley was once asked if the striker was in contention, and his response was not positive.

The Marseille forward is eligible to play for the Reggae Boys through his father. According to the Daily Mail, he has completed the required paperwork to switch nationalities.

He is expected to make his Jamaica debut in June. While the Caribbean nation have games in March’s international break, it is unlikely Marseille will release Greenwood, as the games are friendlies.
