Afenifere demands security upgrade for NAFDAC, EFCC, NDLEA heads amid threats

Appointment of Permanent Secretaries was discretionary when I came in 2019 – Makinde

Amid threats to the life of the Director-General of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has demanded an upgrade to her security.

According to the Yoruba group, the security of the heads of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, should also be reviewed amid the threats.

Afenifere, however, warned that any attempt on the life of the NAFDAC boss would not be tolerated.

The Yoruba group, in a statement by its Organising Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, also appealed to the federal government to provide security for the families of the heads of these agencies. It maintained that an attack on the Director-General would amount to an assault on public health and national security.

Adeyeye had earlier raised the alarm over threats to her life and the safety of her staff amid the ongoing crackdown on counterfeit drugs.

Afenifere stressed that the country cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the activities of purveyors of deadly drugs.

“The recent distress call by Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC, regarding threats to her life and those of her staff must not be dismissed with mere platitudes. She stands at the frontline of Nigeria’s battle against counterfeit drugs, toxic consumables, and the nefarious interests of syndicates profiting from human suffering.

“Nigeria cannot afford to abandon those who risk everything for the greater good. Public officials like Prof Adeyeye, the chairman of the EFCC, and the head of the NDLEA must be fortified with comprehensive security apparatus, including armoured vehicles, elite personnel, and advanced surveillance systems.”
