Arsenal vs West Ham: Toothless Gunners suffer crushing defeat as title hopes fade

Arsenal suffered a debilitating defeat with Afrobeats colossi Tems and Ayra Starr in attendance at the Emirates.

Arsenal failed to capitalise on Liverpool’s slip-up as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wolves at the Emirates. Interestingly, two of Afrobeats’ biggest female superstars, Tems and Ayra Starr, were in attendance.

With the Reds drawing against Aston Villa, the Gunners were presented a chance to cut the distance in the title race to five points.

However, they were stunned just before halftime by a Jarrod Bowen strike, which silenced the Emirates crowd. Just before the goal, however, the ‘Try Me’ crooner, Tems, updated her Instagram story to show she was watching the game at the Emirates, along with Mavins’ top female act, Ayra Starr.

The Gunners failed to muster a comeback in the second leg. Their effort was not helped by the red card to Lewis Skelly in the 73rd minute, which saw them reduced to 10 men.

Tems and football

The trip to the Emirates is the latest in Tems’s involvement and association with sports. She announced a little over a week ago that she was now part of the San Diego FC (SDFC) ownership group, a club in Major League Soccer (MLS) through her company, The Leading Vibe.

The move makes her the first African woman to join the ownership group of the club and Major League Soccer, MLS. Tems joined a group of Club Partners that includes actress Issa Rae, World Cup winner Juan Mata, retired U.S. Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, and baseball star Manny Machado.

Days after that historic achievement, she performed as Aston Martin debuted their liveries during Formula One’s 75th anniversary.

Ayra Starr, on the other hand, has been known for name-dropping footballers in her songs. “Shinji Kagawa, Jesu Christi loba wa” was a line on her smash hit single ‘Sability,’ and during the femme fatale anthem Woman Commando on her album ‘The Year I Turned 21,’ she sang, “ Na why we dey ball like Aghahowa.”

Given the relative obscurity of the names she mentioned on those tracks, many fans speculate that the ‘Commas’ crooner is an avid football fan.

Meanwhile, Arsenal travel to the daunting City Ground for their next Premier League clash, where they will face high-flying Nottingham Forest, currently five points behind them and third on the log.
