The Nigerian-born Danish defender became the youngest Manchester United player to get sent off since 2015, but got a pass from his manager

Manchester United’s young defender Patrick Dorgu endured a difficult night against Ipswich Town, making a crucial mistake that led to an early goal before receiving a red card in the second half.

However, his national team manager, Brian Riemer, has defended him, stating that such errors are common for defenders and should not be overanalysed.

Dorgu receives record-breaking red card

Dorgu’s troubles began when he misplaced a back pass beyond Andre Onana, allowing Ipswich’s Jadon Philogene to tap the ball into an empty net.

Things went from bad to worse when his studs caught Omari Hutchinson’s shin, prompting a VAR review, and the referee subsequently issued a straight red card, making Dorgu the youngest Manchester United player to be sent off in the Premier League since Luke Shaw in February 2015.

The Danish-born Nigerian defender will now serve a three-match suspension, ruling him out of key fixtures, including an FA Cup tie against Fulham.

While his personal evening was disappointing, Manchester United still managed to secure a 3-2 victory, ensuring the team did not suffer from his absence.

Dorgu error defended by managers

Despite the criticism, Dorgu has received strong backing from important figures. His Denmark national team boss, Brian Riemer, who was covering the match, sympathised with the young defender.

He said, “I feel for the boy. Everyone knows it’s not nice to be in a situation like that. But from the coaching side of the table, it’s worse if tactical decisions and individual skills are not good enough.

“From a coaching perspective, I can reassure him by saying it’s a real misunderstanding. It’s a communication error at some level, and of course, it shouldn’t happen, but I think all defenders have experienced that.”

Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim also addressed Dorgu’s performance, acknowledging the mistakes but urging patience, adding, “Any player can have a mistake.”

With his suspension now confirmed, Dorgu must use this time to reflect on his errors, learn from the experience, and return stronger once his ban is over.
