The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced its call for research proposals for the prestigious Wim Duisenberg Research Fellowship Programme, offering leading economists the chance to conduct cutting-edge research at the heart of European monetary policy in 2026.

This fellowship presents a unique opportunity for academics to contribute to policy-relevant research, interact with ECB experts, and gain invaluable insights into the workings of a major central bank.

What is the Wim Duisenberg Research Fellowship?

Established in 2006, the Wim Duisenberg Research Fellowship Programme  aims to:

  • Promote policy-relevant research: Supporting high-quality academic research that directly informs central banking decisions.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange: Exposing ECB research staff to the latest advancements in economic research.
  • Provide practical experience: Offering scholars a firsthand look at the ECB’s policy-making environment.

Fellowship Details:

  • Duration: Two to six months during 2026, which can be completed in a single period or split into multiple shorter visits (subject to agreement with the ECB).
  • Location: The ECB’s Directorate General Research (DG/R) in Frankfurt, Germany.
  • Activities: Fellows will conduct economic research, interact with ECB staff, and produce a research paper for presentation at internal seminars and publication in the ECB’s Working Paper Series.
  • Financial Allowance: Successful candidates will receive a financial allowance commensurate with their seniority.
