About This Research Group at Sussex

The research group at the University of Sussex delves into neutral atomic gases, exploring their quantum-level properties and interactions. Using cutting-edge techniques, the team develops highly sensitive magnetic sensors with applications in nanomaterials, electric vehicle battery monitoring, navigation, brain imaging, and more.

The Project Focus

The project involves:

  • Cooling and trapping neutral atoms using electromagnetic fields to produce Bose-Einstein condensates.
  • Using magnetic microscopy to image current flow patterns in nanostructured and biological samples.
  • Improving the sensitivity of the microscope for applications in 2D sample imaging, materials science, and bio-engineering.

You will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Quantum technologies (lasers, optics, electronics, vacuum systems).
  • Atomic physics and materials science.
  • Imaging and analyzing current flow patterns in 2D nanostructures.

Eligibility Criteria
