Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly leading the race to sign Lyon’s rising star Malick Fofana, who has caught the attention of several top European clubs following impressive performances this season. The 19-year-old forward has been the subject of positive scouting reports, with both Premier League giants eager to bolster their attacking options.

Liverpool are preparing for a potential future without Mohamed Salah, whose contract expires in June, while Arsenal could part ways with Leandro Trossard, who is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia. With Gabriel Martinelli’s future also uncertain, Mikel Arteta is keen to add fresh attacking talent to his squad.

While Arsenal have been heavily linked with Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, his €80m (£67.5m) release clause could make him an expensive target. As a result, Fofana has emerged as a more affordable alternative, with Lyon reportedly valuing him at around €50m (£42.2m).

Fofana, who joined Lyon from Gent in January 2024 for £16.5m, has already made a significant impact, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 55 appearances. His performances in the Europa League have been particularly impressive, netting six goals in nine games as Lyon prepare to face Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

The young Belgian international earned his first senior cap in October and, despite being under contract with Lyon until 2028, is reportedly open to a move this summer. However, Arsenal and Liverpool face stiff competition from Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus, who are also monitoring the teenager’s progress.

Despite the growing interest, neither Fofana’s camp nor Lyon have received any formal offers yet. However, the upcoming Europa League clash against Manchester United will provide Fofana with another opportunity to showcase his talent on a bigger stage.

Fofana’s versatility and goal-scoring ability make him an attractive option for both Premier League sides, especially as they aim to strengthen their attacking depth for the 2025-26 season. Liverpool manager Arne Slot sees him as a potential successor to Salah, while Arteta views him as a long-term replacement for Trossard or Martinelli.

With Lyon’s financial struggles potentially forcing them to cash in on their prized asset, Arsenal and Liverpool are expected to intensify their pursuit in the coming months. Fofana’s decision will likely depend on the sporting project and guaranteed playing time offered by his potential suitors.
