Former Manchester United striker Gary Neville is not entirely convinced that Arsenal were keen on manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to sign Raheem Sterling from Chelsea.
Arteta pushed for the Gunners to bring Sterling to the Emirates Stadium on a loan deal.
Sterling was effectively sidelined at Chelsea by manager Enzo Maresca.
The England winger has so far struggled to make an impact at Arsenal, scoring just one goal in 21 appearances.
“Do you know what I think they have done? In the last part of the summer transfer window, I’m not sure Arsenal wanted to sign Raheem Sterling,” Neville said on The Overlap with Sky Bet.
“I’m not sure Arsenal, as a club, wanted him. I think Arteta thought Sterling could play in all the positions up top and basically told the club to get him in as cover.
“I think that is what he said. He can play across the frontline, so Arteta has looked at him as his second or third striker.”
