Mikel Arteta has come under criticism for “disrespecting” Raheem Sterling during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United. The Gunners fell further behind league leaders Liverpool after failing to secure a win at Old Trafford, despite dominating much of the game.

Bruno Fernandes put United ahead with a stunning free-kick before Declan Rice rescued a point for Arsenal in the 74th minute. As Arsenal pushed for a winner, Arteta opted to bring on Gabriel Martinelli, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and later Kieran Tierney.

However, the decision to introduce Tierney over Sterling was questioned by former England internationals Joe Cole and Carlton Cole. Speaking on The Dressing Room podcast, Carlton Cole labeled the move as “disrespectful,” insisting that a “proper player” like Sterling should have been given the opportunity.

“Raheem is a proper player, we know that,” he said. “I actually think he did alright at Chelsea. He just didn’t suit the club, and they’re focusing on youth. But at Arsenal, I thought he would do well. They needed a goal, and instead of bringing on a proven goalscorer, Arteta put in Tierney. For me, that’s disrespectful.”

Joe Cole echoed the sentiment, suggesting that Sterling would feel overlooked. “It didn’t work out for him at Chelsea, but Arsenal seemed like the perfect fit. The reports say he’s training well and respected by the staff, but if Arteta isn’t using him, I feel for him.”

Sterling has struggled since his loan move from Chelsea, scoring just once this season. When asked about his decision, Arteta dismissed the criticism, saying, “We make decisions based on how the game is developing. He’s come on in many games and didn’t the other day, and that’s it.”

Sterling’s chances of featuring in Arsenal’s Champions League second-leg tie against PSV remain uncertain, with Arteta saying, “I will decide that tomorrow with him and with the rest of them.” Arsenal are in a strong position to progress, having secured a dominant 7-1 victory in the first leg.
