Barcelona sporting director Deco has spoken out about Ronald Araujo’s future, acknowledging that a summer transfer remains a possibility but expressing confidence that the defender will stay at the Camp Nou for the long term.
Araujo was the subject of intense transfer speculation in January, with Juventus and Arsenal both linked to a move for the Uruguayan center-back.
Reports suggested Araujo had concerns about his role under new manager Hansi Flick following his return from injury, leading to stalled contract talks. However, after discussions with Deco, the 25-year-old committed his future to Barcelona by signing a new long-term contract that runs until 2031.

Since renewing his deal, Araujo has re-established himself in Barca’s starting lineup, featuring in three of their last four La Liga matches. He is expected to play a crucial role in their upcoming fixture against Rayo Vallecano.
Speaking to TV3, Deco admitted that no player should stay at a club if they are unhappy but emphasized that Araujo currently has no intention of leaving.
“You can’t have a player who is not happy. He ends up being a problem for the team,” Deco stated. “There are times when you might not play, and that is difficult to manage. We’ve talked to him about it, and he was happy. If in the future he needs to change, the door is open for him to tell us.”
Despite leaving the door open for a potential departure, Deco is convinced that Araujo is committed to Barcelona’s project under Flick.
“I don’t think that [leaving] is what he wants. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have renewed,” he added. “I think he will stay for many more years.”

Araujo, who joined Barcelona from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018, has made over 150 appearances and played a key role in the club’s recent successes. He has helped Barcelona secure a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and two Spanish Super Cups. His performances have also earned him a place in La Liga’s Team of the Season twice, in 2021/22 and 2023/24.
For now, Araujo appears committed to his future at Barcelona, but should doubts resurface, Europe’s top clubs will be ready to pounce.
