Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has labeled Andre Onana’s signing as one of the biggest transfer blunders in Premier League history. Onana arrived from Inter Milan for £47 million in 2023, replacing club legend David de Gea, but has struggled under the weight of expectations.

United’s season under Ruben Amorim has been disastrous, with several of Erik ten Hag’s signings failing to deliver. While players like Antony and Casemiro face uncertain futures, Onana remains a fixture in the starting XI despite persistent criticism.

Stats suggest he hasn’t been a total disaster, but his high-profile mistakes have drawn scrutiny. In Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Ipswich, Onana was at fault for both goals, adding to concerns over his consistency. A shocking stat revealed he has committed 12 errors leading to goals in two seasons compared to De Gea’s 17 in 12 years at Old Trafford.

Speaking on The Cycling GK YouTube channel, Foster and his guest ripped into Onana’s performances. “Replacing De Gea with Onana was one of the worst mistakes in Premier League history,” Foster’s guest stated. The ex-United keeper agreed, saying, “In terms of goalkeeping decisions, it’s right at the top.”

Foster dissected Ipswich’s first goal, blaming Onana for poor communication and positioning. “He should have been vocal, controlled the situation, and guided his defender. Instead, he panicked, and it ended in disaster,” he explained. Comparing United’s defense to Liverpool’s composed backline, Foster highlighted a lack of calmness and leadership.

With Altay Bayindir injured, Onana is expected to start against Fulham in Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round clash. Whether he can silence his critics remains to be seen.
