The Borno State Internal Revenue Service (BOIRS) has reported a record revenue of N28.3 billion in 2024, exceeding its initial target of N19.3 billion by 46 percent.
During a press briefing in Maiduguri, the Executive Chairman of BOIRS, Prof. Bello Alhaji Ibrahim, attributed the success to several key strategies. He emphasized the strong support from Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, public sensitization efforts, digitization of tax collection, and the harmonization of taxes, which reduced multiple tax collectors targeting the same businesses.

Prof. Ibrahim expressed gratitude to the people of Borno for their cooperation and highlighted reforms such as a gradual payment system and a robust invoicing mechanism that ensured accountability in tax collection.

Despite these achievements, the agency faced several challenges, including resistance from local governments to the harmonization program, the impact of flood disasters on businesses, and a decrease in revenue collections from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Looking ahead, BOIRS has set an ambitious target of N35 billion in revenue for 2025, surpassing the state government’s expectation of N25 billion. Prof. Ibrahim reassured taxpayers that no additional burden would be imposed and that all revenue collected would be directed towards development projects to benefit the people of Borno.
