Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool could rival Arsenal for the signing of one of Mikel Arteta’s reported summer targets.

Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool could compete with Arsenal for the signing of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

The former Reds defender has questioned why Arsenal are considered the frontrunners for Isak’s signature, suggesting that the Merseyside club could also be interested in the Swedish forward.

What Carragher said about Arsenal target Isak

Isak has been one of the standout players in the Premier League this season, scoring 17 goals in 22 appearances for Newcastle.  

His performances have attracted interest from a number of clubs, including Arsenal, leading to a rumoured summer transfer to bolster Mikel Arteta’s centre-forward options. 

However, Carragher believes that Liverpool could also be in the market for a striker this summer, with Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez potentially leaving the club. 

“I don’t really get all the talk about going to Arsenal,” said the pundit on the It’s Called Soccer! podcast via Mirror Football. “I know Arsenal would love him, but one thing I would say as well, Arsenal aren’t the only team that need a centre-forward. Liverpool need one as well.

“I think in the summer, Liverpool will be in the market for a centre forward. So I think if he was available, there’s no doubt Arsenal would go for him, but I think Liverpool would be part of that queue as well. 

“The problem you’ve got with Real Madrid is they’ve got [Kylian] Mbappe, Barcelona I’m not sure have the money – but they probably would be in the market for a centre forward because you think of the age of [Robert] Lewandowski, but if he’s to leave Newcastle, he has to go to a team that has a realistic chance of winning the Champions League because that’s how good he is.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Wednesday when they travel to Aston Villa, keen to extend their lead over Arsenal atop the standings to 10 points.
