Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has come to the defense of Cole Palmer, dismissing any claims that the club’s star player is struggling physically. Palmer, who had been in electrifying form earlier in the season, was even labeled by Jamie Carragher as the best player in the Premier League back in December. However, his performances have since waned, mirroring Chelsea’s recent struggles.

The 22-year-old endured a frustrating spell in recent defeats against Aston Villa and Brighton, extending his goal drought to six matches. As Chelsea prepares to face Southampton, Maresca remains confident in Palmer’s ability to lead the charge despite speculation about his fitness.

Maresca Dismisses Physical Concerns

Maresca is adamant that Palmer is not struggling physically, emphasizing the midfielder’s work ethic in training. He highlighted a recent fitness test conducted at the club, where Palmer emerged as the strongest player.

“Every six or seven months, we do a physical test. We did one in pre-season and another last week, and Palmer was the strongest one. That shows his desire—not just on the ball, but in his work ethic. He’s doing fantastic,” Maresca stated.

The Chelsea boss also acknowledged the high expectations surrounding Palmer, stating that fans and teammates rely on him for goals and assists. However, he emphasized that success ultimately depends on the entire team, not just one player.

Champions League Hopes and Future Uncertainty

Chelsea’s inconsistent form has jeopardized their chances of securing a Champions League spot for the first time since 2022. Maresca was asked whether missing out on European football could push players like Palmer toward an exit.

“For now, we need to see how we finish. If we don’t make the top four, we’ll see if Cole is happy or not,” Maresca said. “I don’t think he’s worried about next season right now. He’s just focused on helping the team.”

He lightheartedly added, “I think Cole signed a new contract until 2045,” dismissing any immediate concerns over the player’s future.

Maresca Confident Despite Chelsea’s Struggles

Despite their recent slump, Maresca remains optimistic about Chelsea’s trajectory. Tuesday’s clash against Southampton presents an opportunity to secure only their third league win in 11 matches. A victory would temporarily lift them back into the top four and ease the pressure on the manager.

“I’m even more sure than when we started,” Maresca asserted. “People judge based on results. A month ago, when we were winning and second in the league, everyone was happy. Now that we’ve dropped to seventh, people have doubts. But for me, it’s just a matter of results.”

With Chelsea desperate to regain form, Maresca’s belief in his philosophy remains unwavering. The coming weeks will determine whether Palmer and his teammates can turn things around and salvage their season.
