Jose Fonte has criticized Chelsea for missing out on Victor Osimhen, a striker he believes has the potential to be the next Didier Drogba. The Blues had been linked with the Nigerian forward for months but failed to secure a deal before the January transfer deadline.
Despite being one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe, Osimhen ended up on a season-long loan at Galatasaray from Napoli. The 26-year-old was hoping for a permanent move, but no club met his £113m release clause last summer. Reports suggested Chelsea considered a January bid, yet no move materialized.
Fonte, who played for Crystal Palace, Southampton, West Ham, and Portugal, believes Chelsea will regret missing out on Osimhen. Speaking to BoyleSports, he said, “Chelsea desperately need a striker like Osimhen.
He has the qualities of a winner, just like Drogba. While their styles differ, Osimhen has the pace, power, and technical ability to be a nightmare for defenders.”
The former defender questioned why no Premier League club moved for Osimhen, calling it a missed opportunity. “When I saw him join Galatasaray, I thought it was crazy that no English club signed him. He has the aggression, speed, and intelligence to bully defenders in the Premier League,” Fonte added.
Having faced Osimhen in the Champions League, Fonte admitted the striker’s ability was overwhelming. “Even at almost 40, he gave me a tough time, and I think he took it easy on me as a friend. He’s a hardworking player who has fought his way to success, and he deserves it,” he said.
Fonte is eager to see Osimhen play in England, believing he belongs in the Premier League. “You want to see him compete against the best, week in and week out. It’s just a matter of time,” he concluded.
