A Yankuba Minteh brace followed Kaoru Mitoma’s brilliant opening goal to seal the West London club’s heaviest loss under their Italian boss.

Maresca admitted that his team’s performance was unacceptable and that they need to show more fight and determination if they want to achieve their goals this season.

“In the moment we are, 14 games to go before tonight’s game, you can go one point from third,” said the Chelsea head coach after the game.

“To come here and play in the way we played, not on the ball but in terms of desire we need to show more.”

He added: “In terms of the way we play on the ball, it wasn’t our worst performance. The result, yeah, no doubt. We arrived in the final third but struggled to create chances.

“In this moment, the bad feeling is that we look as if we will easily concede chances and struggle to create chances. We have 13 games to go and we need to finish in the best way.”

The Blues have now won just two of their last nine Premier League matches and are in danger of falling out of the top four, with Manchester City two points behind before hosting Newcastle on Saturday.

What next for Chelsea?

Chelsea return to action next Saturday, February 22 at Aston Villa, keen to return to winning ways after five away league games without a win.
