Segun Sowunmi, an ally of Atiku Abubakar, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has cautioned against a declaration of a state of emergency in Osun State.

Sowunmi argued that if former President Goodluck Jonathan did not declare a state of emergency in Borno State, President Bola Tinubu’s administration should not do so in Osun.

Amid the local government crisis in Osun State, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ajibola Basiru, had urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state.

However, speaking on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, Sowunmi dismissed the idea, saying: “There were rumours that some people are deceiving themselves with talk of declaring a state of emergency in Osun.

“For what and why? (Ex-President Goodluck) Jonathan did not declare a state of emergency when the Vice President (Kashim Shettima) was governor in Borno, even with all the shenanigans of Chibok and everything that happened.”

He also warned APC against any attempt to stifle opposition and turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution defines a state of emergency as a situation of national danger or disaster in which a government suspends normal constitutional procedures to regain control.
