A Newcastle United star is unavailable for the Carabao Cup final.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United will have to improvise against Liverpool after Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card in the Magpies’ FA Cup fifth-round loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Gordon to serve three-match ban
Gordon received a red card for violent conduct during the tie for shoving Jan Paul van Hecke in the game’s 83rd minute.

The dismissal will result in a three-match ban for violent conduct unless Newcastle appeal the decision, and the winger’s absence is a significant blow to Newcastle, as he has been a regular starter and goal scorer, finding the net nine times in all competitions.

This incident mirrors a previous Carabao Cup final where Eddie Howe’s men also had a player suspended — Nick Pope missed the 2023 final against Manchester United after his red card against Liverpool.
“I don’t know what Anthony’s intention was, I’m sure it wasn’t to harm or get the red card in that moment,” Howe said after the game. “I don’t know what happened in that moment.”
“If we analyse the incident and feel there are grounds for that (an appeal), we will do so without hesitation.”
What next for Newcastle United?
Newcastle travel to West Ham in league action on March 10 before facing Liverpool in the final six days later.
