Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison seemed to take aim at Roy Keane after his match-winning performance against Manchester United.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has responded to recent criticism with a match-winning performance against Manchester United.

The 28-year-old scored the only goal of the game and celebrated by putting his finger to his lips in a shushing motion.

What happened?

Maddison’s celebration was seemingly a response to comments made by former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, who had questioned his ability and predicted that Tottenham would be relegated.

“We saw Maddison at Tamworth. He got taken off. Tamworth are non-league,” Keane said on The Overlap Podcast last week. “People say ‘Maddison’s the man’. When’s he going to step up to the plate? He got relegated at Leicester, he’s going to get relegated at Spurs.”

Maddison admitted that he had been motivated by the “outside noise” and that he wanted to do his talking on the pitch.

“There was a little bit of outside noise this week,” said the Spurs star. “Wasn’t there?

“But no, listen, people have their opinions but I wanted to do my talking on the pitch so I hope there’s a certain few people who enjoyed me being the match winner today.”

Maddison’s goal was his 10th of the season in all competitions, and the attacking midfielder has also provided six assists; Sunday’s performance against Manchester United was his first since returning from a calf injury.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou praised the returnee’s performance and lauded the player’s contribution to the team’s victory.

What next for Tottenham?

Maddison should feature for Spurs when they face Ipswich Town on Sunday, February 22.
