Over the weekend, Albacete fan Alberto Gonzalez was just one result away from turning his bet into a life-changing €4 million (approximately ₦6 billion), but in a cruel twist of fate, it was his own team that crushed his dreams.

Gonzalez had successfully predicted 14 out of 15 results in his accumulator bet, needing just one more win to secure his massive payout.

However, Albacete—the club he passionately supports—unexpectedly pulled off an upset victory against league leaders Almeria, causing his bet to fail at the final hurdle.

Albacete’s match against Almeria was the final fixture on Gonzalez’s bet slip, and he had backed Almeria to win—a logical decision given their position at the top of the league.

The match began as a nightmare for the fan-turned-punter, as Jon Morcillo opened the scoring for Albacete in the 13th minute.

Any hopes of an Almeria comeback were further dashed when Morcillo converted a 70th-minute penalty, making it 2-0. An 86th-minute goal from Lucas Robertone briefly reignited Gonzalez’s hopes, but the match ended 2-1 in favour of Albacete, officially shattering his multimillion-dollar dream.

After hearing about Gonzalez’s heartbreak, Albacete arranged a video call between him and Jon Morcillo, the man whose goals sealed the fate of his bet.

“I come to apologize for the four million. I’m laughing, but it’s not funny to me,” Morcillo said. Gonzalez, though disappointed, took it with some humour, replying, “That you played the great game you did against Almeria made me crazy. It’s the first time that I wasn’t happy that Albacete scored a goal.”

Despite missing out on the life-changing payout, Gonzalez did not walk away empty-handed. Reports indicate that he still managed to win €45,000 (₦70 million) from other bets he placed on similar results. While this amount is a fraction of what he could have won, it’s still a significant sum.

Morcillo, feeling guilty for playing a part in his loss, offered a friendly gesture, saying, “I’m hurt for him. It’s a lot of money, and I’m truly sorry. If it were the other way around, I would be very angry with you. Dinner is on me.”

In the end, Gonzalez would likely take the loss with a silver lining, as he got to meet his heroes while making some money as well.
