Former Super Eagles captain tips new Eric Chelle to turn Super Eagles fortune around

Big headache for Erik Chelle as Super Eagles star ruled out of World Cup qualifiers

Joseph Yobo, a former Nigerian captain, expressed confidence that the Super Eagles will improve their performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Eric Chelle as their new head coach.

Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign has been tumultuous, with the Super Eagles failing to secure a victory in their first four matches.

The team has dropped points against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and South Africa and suffered a surprising 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in June.

Nigeria has dropped to fifth place in Group C with only three points as a result of their recent poor performance.

The Super Eagles legend urged Nigerians to support new coach Chelle as he starts his tenure.

According to ScoreNigeria, Yobo said, “There’s a new coach for the Super Eagles (Eric Chelle) and I expect the players to be on top of their game to prove to him they are good enough to play for Nigeria.

“This is what often happens in clubs with new coaches. So, I expect the Super Eagles to be at their best.

“He has been appointed as the Super Eagles coach and we should give him maximum support.

“As former coach of Mali, he has the experience and knowledge of African football and we will be playing against African teams, not England.”

Nigeria will face Rwanda in Kigali on March 21st, and then host Zimbabwe in Uyo four days later, for the crucial qualifiers. Chelle is expected to announce his first squad in March, ahead of these matches.
