Plumptre, who made history as the first high-profile women’s football signing in the Saudi Pro League in 2023, has been making waves in the Middle East alongside some of football’s biggest names, including Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kanté, who play for Al Ittihad men’s team.

Now, she is using her voice to address the darker side of the sport—human trafficking and unethical recruitment practices.

“Sport trafficking is a critical issue that demands immediate attention and action from all stakeholders – government, advocates, leaders, professional athletes, and policymakers,” said Lerina Bright, Executive Director of Mission 89, in a statement shared by the organisation.

“Ashleigh’s dedication to protecting vulnerable young athletes and her platform as an athlete will be instrumental in amplifying our message and reaching communities at risk.”

As part of her new role, Plumptre will spearhead initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of trafficking in sports, advocating for better protection measures, and educating young athletes and their families about safe recruitment practices.

Plumptre, known for her strong defensive skills on the pitch and her passion for social justice off it, expressed her deep commitment to the cause.

“As a footballer, I have observed firsthand how aspirations can serve as both a source of hope and a potential vulnerability for young athletes,” she stated.

“My experiences in professional sports have taught me that talent alone is insufficient; protection, education, and ethical pathways are vital components.”

The Super Falcons star further emphasised that Mission 89 represents more than just an organisation to her—it is a movement to reshape the narrative around youth in football.

“We are not merely preventing trafficking; we are reclaiming the true spirit of the game—a spirit characterized by opportunity, dignity, and hope,” she added.

This partnership comes at a crucial time, with increasing concerns over the exploitation of young footballers.

Mission 89’s recently released Global Thematic Report on Sport Trafficking has called for stricter legislation and greater collaboration between governments and institutions worldwide to combat this growing issue.

Plumptre’s appointment signals a bold step towards real change, ensuring that young athletes chasing their dreams are not exploited along the way.
